I Am Finally Going Camping This Year Oh! What Possessed Me

My wife and our seven year old twin girls have been trying to persuade me to go camping for years and I have always resisted with a fierce determination. I believe that we were not designed to stay outdoors all night or at least I wasn’t! I was without question made to have my holidays in an all inclusive hotel on a Mediterranean island haha!

Over the last few years as I have said there has been a lot of convincing that we should go camping and I’ve finally buckled under the pressure and said yes, let’s go camping! What you need to keep in mind is that I have never been camping in my life so this will be a whole new experience for me. Oh my goodness what have let myself in for! Well I’m about to find out in August as we go on our first camping trip.

So to go camping you need a tent and a little a while ago we acquired a tent that sleeps 6 people. This should easily be enough room for all of us. The tent does have an area in the front where you can sit out during the day but it is not very big and doesn’t offer a lot of shelter from either the sun or rain for that matter. So we decided for some extra room to sit during the day to buy a pop-up gazebo. This is perfect for giving us an area to eat lunch and tea. This year we decided instead of having a holiday abroad in a hotel we would have short breaks throughout the summer holidays camping in the UK. After all if the sun is shining there is no better place in the world to have a holiday than in the UK. In this country we have some of the best beaches, the most beautiful countryside and of course so many historical sites to visit. You couldn’t ask for a more interesting holiday with something to do everyday.

Although I’m not sure if camping is my type of holiday I am beginning to come around to the idea. We have already stayed in a yurt in Somerset about a month ago. It was in the middle of nowhere and in all honesty there was something very revitalising about not hearing traffic or the sounds of a city. Waking up to just the sounds of birds and nothing else was actually beautiful and something I could get used to very quickly. 

Also this weekend we are off to to the Isle of Wight for a music festival. Hopefully the rain will stay away, but this is the UK and normally at festivals in the UK the heavens open and we live in mud for three days. We will be glamping at the festival, but this will definitely give me a taste of the outdoors and hopefully prepare me for our camping trips.

I am beginning to think that by the end of the school summer holidays I’m going to be a camping convert and as time nears for our first camping trip, yes, I’m a bit nervous but also very excited. I’m really looking forward to seeing the girls getting outdoors and away from the technology that surrounds so much of our lives nowadays.
