I Lost My Temper with My Twins But I Don’t Regret It
We are approximately two and a half weeks into the school summer holidays and I think I have done very well in keeping my temper with my six year old twin girls. That was until the other day when I finally snapped. This is unusual for me because I very rarely shout like I did at one of the girls. In truth it could easily have been either of them, but it just happened to be M.
We were just making a move out to go out for tea at a local pub and I said to the girls come on let’s get in the car. So the girls did what they normally do and run from the front door to be first to the car. Life is just one big competitive game when you are a six year old twin. The girls always sit on the same side in the car and generally will open the door to where they sit, but not today. R decided to go in through what M considers her door. This led to a situation that makes me want to pull my hair out from the root one at a time. M shouted at R to go in her side and as she did so she shut the door on R’s arm and hand which of course led to instant tears from both of them.
Both of them went running back into the house with me shouting very very loudly at M for her actions, and all while R was crying in pain, or maybe not so much pain, but shock. M was crying because I had really raised my voice and seriously chastised her for her terrible actions which could of course resulted in a nasty injury. Thankfully it didn’t and after a while R was fine.![]()
M in the meantime was still upset, but I wanted her to say sorry to her sister for her actions. I felt very strongly that her actions were unacceptable and finally she did say sorry.
I have no regrets over losing my temper, it is certainly not something I do often, but just occasionally I feel it’s required that children cannot do what they wish when they like. Bad behaviour and this certainly was, it was deliberate and done with intention and I for one won’t let that ride.
There are joys to having twins there is no doubt about that and I wouldn’t want it any other way, but at times they have a competitive edge between them which can drive you insane and at times it does.
If you two girls ever read this, I just want to say you don’t have to compete because in Mummy and daddy’s eyes you are both equal and loved exactly the same so stop competing with each other and enjoy being twin sisters, because that is a very special relationship. Love each other with all your hearts forever.

Tempers get lost sometimes. I’ve written about this myself. Sometimes I don’t when I think “wow, how did I not” and other times I do and think “wow, you lost it over something like THAT!”. We’re only human. If I feel I’ve crossed a line I do apologise to the girls when the dust settles though. But, like you, I sometime feel it was justified.

Very thought provoking post. I think it’s onky natural to lose out tempest sometimes. We are only human after all. My red line is when the girls micm around by ruads having been run over myself. That and when one hurts one if the others as this is because in point here. Sometimes a good shourubg to ours them in check 🙂

Don’t beat yourself up about it – it happens to the best of us. It happened to me a couple of times where I had good reason but I feel guilty and apologise afterwards. But I do think that somehow my kids learn a lesson that they need to adhere to certain boundaries set #TriumphantTales

Oh gosh I have all this competitiveness to come!! I agree with you, there are circumstances where raised voices are necessary and hopefully it will make them realise their actions were wrong and won’t consider doing it again!
Thank you for sharing this with us at #TriumphantTales. I hope to see you back next week.

I enjoyed reading your post. I have two toddler boys born only a year apart. They are at the stage where they are always fighting over toys. They are also very physical and they like to hit and wrestle one another. I told myself I wanna be like Daniel Tiger’s mom…so patient and kind…like that’s my ultimate goal. But right now I am just Tiger mom- Asian Tiger mom to be exact. I feel guilty whenever I lose my temper, yet I also know that I have to teach my kids that fighting is unacceptable. #blogcrush

Bloody hell, Nige, of course you were right to give out to her … could have been a really nasty accident. Kids have to know limits and boundaries! #BlogCrush

I think you’re totally justified , it’s scary how easily nasty accidents can happen. Must be quite the dynamic with twins and competitiveness .
Congratulations someone lovedthis post so much they added it to our #blogcrush linky
