Is it Possible for a Four Year Old to Inherit OCD.

October 18, 2016

One of my four year old twin girls, R, is definitely shows signs of OCD. I have been wondering if this is possibly hereditary because as a child right through to my teenage years and early twenties I suffered from this condition, although I’m not sure it was known as that in those days. I was probably just thought of as a bit nutty. OMG! I found a cure. I became a parent and was instantly cured! Sleep deprivation, screaming babies and your life being taken away from you! Why would care if the house was in the order you wanted it? So a picture frame was crooked! There is toys all over the floor. Never mind!

On a more serious note growing up in a very dysfunctional family home and having what I call an interesting childhood, I found a sense of security in having my little part of the world in order.

An example of this would be that I collected vinyl records and they would always have to have an order alphabetically and all the artists together and then the order in which they were realeased. I used to read a lot, then I had children, no more reading time! However, when I was younger my books were always on a shelf in perfect order of those read and those unread. My school books were always in pristine condition and all my clothes were in an order in my wardrobe.

This was very important to me because in the midst of a car crash of a childhood this is what kept me sane and made me feel normal, although I’m sure my friends thought differently, but it helped me through some very difficult times.

Fast forward to parenthood, well you simply don’t have time, and after 5 children you don’t care or have the desire. Yippee! My OCD is cured!

My own children, well I definitely think two of them inherited my OCD. My eldest who is 21, if you get in her car everything has its place and god forbid you touch or move anything. She also used to share a bedroom with her sister and it was like looking at two different worlds. Her side was perfect and everything in its place and her sister, well that looks like a bomb had just gone off clothes and all her possessions everywhere.

As mentioned above, R  appears to have OCD and this is fascinating. She seems to have rituals and likes to make collections of toys, but the toys are in a particular order always and not to be touched. Every night she puts her sheep watch, Nike cap with her initials on it, her green sunglasses and teenage mutant turtle shoes down by the sofa where she sits ready for the morning. The one that really fascinates me is her books by the side of her bed. They have to be in a certain order which is related to size and if they fall down no-one is allowed to put them back except her. It never ceases to amaze me how carefully she puts them back.

Now is it possible to inherit OCD? I don’t know if I’m honest, but thankfully the cure is out there. Become a PARENT!

Love that you found a cure. I have never had OCD but am a lot less apologetic these days if there are things out of place because frankly my children are busy making memories (and I’m usually up from 5am following the whirlwinds around and simply can’t be bothered to pick up everything they scattered)

I reading this downstairs, but if somebody went up to my closet right now, I could tell them with a frightening degree of accuracy what shirts were in what order from left to right in my closet right now. I actually have something similar written and scheduled for tomorrow. I don’t know if its something inherited or something learned by watching, but it can be weird sometimes. My wife claims tha if she were to put a knife in the fork spot in the drawer I’d know it as soon as I pulled in the driveway. Mini me is the same

I’m really not sure of the answer but I suspect my Mother has a form of OCD and I think my eldest child has it too, he is so tidy and always has been while the rest of my kids are slobs! My close friend also suffers but as a mother she is a cleaning fanatic, I don’t know how she copes coming into my house, may be that’s why she has one child and I have six. I’m glad parenthood has worked for you, having lots of kids really does leave tidying the most thankless chore around. #BestWorst

Parenting seems to cure a lot of things haha! My 2 yo is very precise about where certain things have to go but has no qualms in littering her toys all around the house!! #BestandWorst

This is really interesting. I’m glad for you it was cured with having kids. R is really neat and organised; it’s pretty amazing. My daughter is the opposite with a lot of nagging. Hopefully for R it won’t affect her in anyway and it disappears with time (as long as she stays tidy hehe). Thanks for sharing with #bestandworst x

What an interesting post. Makes you wonder doesn’t it? But woah, yes totally agree becoming a parent cures many things – great it cured your OCD, who has the time or effort anymore ey? My little one is 21 months and still doesn’t care about where things go – but she isn’t happy if she goes to find something and its not in it’s usually place #bestandworst

That’s so interesting, I’m not sure if OCD is genetic. I briefly covered this disorder during my second year of university on my Psychology course but completely forgot all about it lol. I think as long as it’s not affecting them it does have it’s benefits! It’s nice to see when kids respect and take care of their things 🙂 #ThatFridayLinky

My 8 year old is obsessive about how her cushions and quilt is laid at the end of her bed and I really hope this doesn’t develop into OCD but good to know it can be overcome. Thanks for hosting #thatfridaylinky

You are so right, parenting is the cure of OCD. I had it as a child and it becamse worse when I was stressed, like sitting exams etc. Everything had its place. Then I had children and everything went everywhere! I had never linked being a parent as being the cure but I have now! #ThatFridayLinky

I’m glad that you found a cure! I think children can definitely inherit our traits or at least pick up and mimic them. My eldest is a real worrier and he definitely gets that from me!! I wish becoming a parent had cured me of it, I think it’s made it worse! #thatfridaypost

Aww I completely agree! I used to be really bad; leaving things in neat piles of things to do and things to put away, never left a thing out of place, and all dvds/cds/books were neatly stacked in alphabetical order however since having Mia, I have relaxed slightly and although I still do the odd things like needing everything to be in its exact place, its fine and it works for us. Mia seems to not care at the moment however shes only 3 and I can imagine she will start to pick up my ‘habits’ in the coming years! 🙂

I’m pretty sure our kids are part clones. Mine definitely have some of my weird idiosyncrasies. It’s kind of funny but kind of annoying all at the same time. But then I realise how annoying my quirks must be to others haha.

Definitely inheritable. Part learned, mostly inherited IMO. Kept under control it’s so bad a habit, but it can become life changing very quickly.

We find this with Corb every single day!! He has so many little ‘ways’ that he has to do things. I always knew I had slight OCD but since Corben has come along if anything for me, he’s highlighted how OCD I am!! It’s a strange one with the both of us… It isn’t always about putting things in order, it is a lot of the time just about the way certain things should be done.

I know strange, but I get exactly where you;re coming from with this Nigel.

I love this post! I also suffered from OCD in the form of magic thinking when I was a child and it has occasionally reared its head during adulthood but becoming a mum has definitely kept me so busy and I don’t really have time for my compulsions any more! #ThatFridayLinky

I definitly agree that becoming a parent changes your thoughts and priorities. You’re so busy looking after little ones you don’t have time to consider your own thoughts. Thanks for hosting 🙂 #ThatFridayLinky

I have always been slightly OCD about where everything goes and I definitely think amelia is like it too. Whenever I tell her to put her pencils away she always makes sure they’re the right way around and in an order and she’s only 18 months! #thatfridaylinky

Hi – great post. I especially love the detail/image of the room with one side neat and the other sloppy. I can just see it.

Great post Nige. I do wonder about charecteristics we pass onto our kids.

Buddy seems to have inherited a few of my idiosyncrasies.

R is still young so hopefully it will disappear before it gets too serious. Maybe she just likes order.

I always had to touch certain things when I walked past them as a child and even had to rotate to feel like I was getting into a car in the right direction! But yes that’s all gone now fortunately (most of the time). Our little one loves lining things up perfectly in order but hopefully that’s as far as it goes!! #ThatFridayLinky

I used to be a bit OCD with things like odd numbers and stepping on things a certain number of times so it was even on both feet (for example if i stepped on a drain with my left foot i would have to do the same with my right!) very strange! But then like you I had my children and now i dont care where the hell im stepping as long as it isnt on a piece of lego! #thatfridaylinky
