Why Do We Bare Our Souls.
Writing a blog is something that fascinates me. Why? You may ask. Well lots of people like to write about their hobbies or interests or their children, and that’s just brilliant that they want to share their passions with us all.
There is another side of blogging that really fascinates me though. It’s how many of us, including myself, that bare our souls and delve deep into our past and tell the world of some of the most tough, difficult times that life has dealt us.

I cannot say why other people do it, but I can say why I do. Prior to me becoming a blogger I used to have a filing cabinet in my brain, actually many filing cabinets, and this is where I would store my memories, which could be good, bad or indifferent and some of those memories I just wanted to forget completely. Unfortunately all memories cannot be locked away forever. They are there floating around in a never ending circle just waiting to pop into your thoughts.
If they were good memories I was able to access them and think about the good and happy times with a smile on my face. That was always the easy one.
The indifferent memories just float around my mind occasionally coming to the front and maybe give me a smile or not, but these memories are of little consequence so it didn’t matter what happened to them. They were just there.
Then there was memories of difficulties and sadness in my life. The difficult childhood I had. Divorce, drinking and depression, but this is where I thought I had it sorted it. They were in the filing cabinet that was locked in my mind, put away never to be brought out. That filing cabinet had a padlock on it. The only problem with this of course was that no matter how hard you try to bury the bad memories they come at you when you least expect it. When you are feeling vulnerable and not particularly happy, it’s a natural human instinct to think of the bad times in your life.
Starting my blog two years ago, one of my main objectives was to write about some of the bad things that have happened in my life. It was to try and find a sort of closure on some issues that had haunted me for far too many years. The time had come to lay a lot of ghosts to rest.

What concerned me about writing such personal posts about myself was did I really want everybody to know my business and whether anybody is actually interested. The truth is though, I was writing for myself.
This reason I write posts that sometimes delve deep into my memories is a form of therapy. Blogging has given me the opportunity to maybe not remove the bad memories, but at least understand and come to terms with them and not leave them locked away to rear their ugly heads when I least expect them.
This is the reason why I write personal posts about myself. It’s to help me and if somebody can identify with them and gain any help from them in their own lives, that gives me a lot of happiness.
I would love to know why if you write personal posts about your life on your blog?

It’s great that you find blogging to have helped you. I’ll be honest and say that I won’t be baring my soul in the blog. Certain topics are off limits and I’m ok with that.

I think this is part of the reason I’ve not told my nearest and dearest about the blog. If I wanted to do a warts n all personal post I might censor it if I knew they might read it.
Great post Nigel

I do personal posts for more thannone reason, one is for it to act as a resource for anyone going through something similar. .to give hope, direction or actual assistance.
Another reason is to act as a chronicle so that one day if my kids ever stumble across it they would have a worm hole into our life as it was when they were very small.
And lastly for me, because I find joy in writing and expressing myself in the written word.
It’s wonderful that the written word can be so cathartic for you. I hope you manage to work through all your ‘files’

What you write here is so true. Writing is a form of “therapy” for many, including myself. It helps us to come to terms and verbalize our experiences whether good or bad! Whilst others might disagree with baring their soul to the world, I guess that’s a personal choice! And that’s OK. However, I find posts like these admirable and heart warming! Good on you! You never know who might stumble across this and it could change their lives! Thank you for linking up to #GlobalBlogging! See you next week I hope!

I love this post because you really get into why blogging is so meaningful to you, and to me. It’s such a great way to let go of things that have been haunting you for years. I am definitely one of those people who keep their feelings locked up, almost to a point where I bury them so deep I forget that they are there but then they pop up randomly in the worst situations. Blogging is a fantastic way to ease these feelings, totally agree with you. Thanks for sharing with #GlobalBlogging!

Nige, you’ve hit the nail on the head for me with this. I write for me, first and foremost, but as you know, I write a lot about mental health, trying to raise awareness and make others they don’t go through it themselves.
Your analogy about a filing cabinet makes so much sense, it resonates with me a lot. #globalblogging

I write personal posts in many ways as therapy for myself, and because I just write was in in my head at any given moment. But the best thing is knowing that some posts I write inspire others. For me blogging is about helping others see they are not alone and if a glimpse into my weird mind and my world helps then it is all worth it. #globalblogging
