My mum will be 89 years old today. Quite an achievement to say the least.
A very long life that I would have to say has been interesting and lively, but most importantly she has lived life to the full.

At 89 years of age she is in reasonable health, although sadly house bound nowadays. Other than that she has memory lapses which are associated with old age, wait are they? I get them too! OMG ! I must be getting old too, haha! Today we will be taking her out to lunch, to celebrate her birthday.
I have been so lucky to have my mum in my life for so long. There have definitely been times in the past that I could have easily fallen out with her permanently just like my brother and sister did many years ago, but that is a post for another day. There is no doubt that my mum was at times in her life very awkward to get on with. She certainly had a selfish streak that I think doesn’t work well when you are a parent.
I am reminded occasionally how lucky I am to have my mum still in my life and she is here to celebrate her birthday with her family for another year.
The reason I’m reminded about how lucky I am to still mum in my life, is because my wife’s mum passed away some 12 years ago and she doesn’t have her mum to wish her a happy birthday, or see our children grow up and that at times must be very difficult to bear. So this makes me feel very lucky.
I have been fortunate that my children have had a grandmother to watch them grow and in the case of my older children grow up to be well adjusted adults. Also my five year old twins will now remember their Nana and that gives me a nice feeling inside.
When I was younger I only at times saw faults with my mum especially her parenting skills, but I have found that as I have gotten older, I realised none of us are the perfect parent or for that matter the perfect child. We all have imperfections no matter who we are. I’m thankful that we have always had a good relationship and although we did fall out at times, it was never for long.
So today it’s my mums birthday and I feel blessed that she is still in my life and my wife’s and my children’s, her grandchildren.
Happy birthday Mum, have a great day. I love you lots, your son Nigel xx

Lovely! Happy Birthday! I was the same until I had kids of my own, I truly understand that having children is hard and no one hands you a manual, you get on with it the best way you can and I love my parents for it!
