Mothers/Fathers Day And Schools

July 10, 2017

So Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are over for another year, and in some ways I’m thinking thank goodness for that.

Since Father’s Day something has been really niggling away at me. My five year old twin girls didn’t make a card in school for me. I found this really surprising, and will explain why. On Mother’s Day back in March, the girls made cards in school for their mum, and when they brought them home on the Friday before Mothering Sunday, they hid them and told me that mummy can’t see them until the Sunday. I just thought, aww, how sweet.

Giving the cards on the Sunday to their Mum was a special moment, not only for them, but also for us because it’s something that they had made all by themselves and was given to their mum with so much love. It also shows how much they love their mum.

Fast forward to June 18th and Father’s Day, my twins didn’t make any cards for their dad because the school decided to basically ignore Father’s Day. This all got me wondering why and actually how stereotypical it is that it seems that we will make Mother’s Day cards because the attitude is that all children have mothers in their lives, but not fathers.

This is so wrong. There is every chance today that children don’t have mothers in their lives. Yes I’m sure there are a lot of divorced parents in any school classroom nowadays, but that doesn’t mean they are not in their lives, in fact in my opinion in a divorced relationship there is more chance that the dad is playing a more active role. So why would a school like ours decide that it’s best to ignore Father’s Day for fear of offending mothers and children because the same could easily be said about Father’s Day.

So I was a bit put out that my five year old twins didn’t make me a card in school for Father’s Day because the school decided to ignore the day.

I beg the question if you are going to blank Father’s Day then you must need surely to blank Mother’s Day so that way nobody gets offended?

Does your children’s school ignore Father’s Day? I would love to know.

No cards for me but there was a Father’s Day shop.

Gifts up to £3. My 6yo came home with 2.50 change!?

And if you’re wondering what 50p buys you at such a shop… tomato seeds.

It’s a bit of a myth that Fathers Day was added on as a commercial venture, in fact its been around for at least 100 years (admittedly not as long as Mothers Day, that was ancient Greece). So yes, to miss it out seems a little odd. That said, I won’t loose any sleep, just as long as I get a cuddle, I know I’m appreciated!

My husband is very proud of the fact that when he divorced his first wife he had custody and brought up his son, I have written about giving cards to absent father’s in my blog post on absent parents
