Preparing Your Kids for a Greener Future

May 24, 2017

Of all the challenges we parents encounter when raising our children, nothing is more difficult than coping with changes that we ourselves find difficult to grasp. For instance, our children are going to grow up with technology in their hands that far exceeds those bulky computers of old that we used to use at work. Computers used to be the size of entire wardrobes, but that technology has been condensed into tiny smartphones that are a thousand times more powerful.

But now that us parents have had time to catch up with the latest modern trends and social media, it’s time to prepare ourselves for the next big change in society: green living. It’s a topic that our kids learn about in school and it’s something we here about all the time in the world. Our planet is slowly being drained of all its natural resources and there’s very little we humans can do about it. We have to inspire change for the younger generation if we’re going to save the earth, and it all starts with small changes that we need to teach our children.

So in order to prepare the future generation for a greener and more sustainable lifestyle, here are a couple of tips to get you started.

Reduce Car Usage

No matter how useful our cars are, they’re ultimately not green at all. They contribute to noise and air pollution and they’re incredibly expensive to run. Reduce your car usage and encourage your children to walk more for health reasons and also to save money. You don’t want your children to grow older and rely on their vehicles, so teach them to use greener methods of travel such as public transport, bikes and their own two legs.

Look for Help

There is a wealth of assistance available on the internet if you’re willing to look for it. Services like Home Logic are great at teaching you how to reduce energy costs and switch to greener and eco-friendly options, while communities such as Reddit are fantastic for sharing opinions and asking for help from everyday individuals like yourself. Whether you’re struggling to convince your children or you’re having a hard time coping with a greener lifestyle, there’s plenty of help out there.

Teach Better Habits

Things such as turning off the lights in rooms that aren’t in use and switching appliances off by the mains are habits that can and should be taught at a young age. Leaving devices on standby might make it more convenient to start them up again, but it also eats up energy and you can save a lot of money by turning your devices off completely instead of leaving them on sleep mode. The earlier you teach your children these habits, the more likely they’ll stick.

Eat Healthily

Lastly, we can’t forget about eating healthily. Not only does eating fresh fruits and vegetables promote good health, it also promotes sustainable farming. Buying organic and local foods is a great way to support local businesses, and growing your own ingredients can be a fantastic way to save money and start a new hobby.
