So You Think You Know Your Children, But When….

August 4, 2017

So you think you know your children, but when they become teenagers or sometimes before the reality and truth of the matter is they will only give you a screenshot of their life when it suits them, as we did with our parents.

My second oldest daughter turned 20 a couple of days ago and it made think how much do I know about her life? For the last two years she has lived on her own at university about a two hour drive from us.

I have if I’m honest, absolutely no idea how easy or difficult her life is at probably any given time. I no longer know her daily routine, if she is stressed or unhappy or for that matter deliriously happy. It can at times be difficult for me to deal with, because no matter how old your children are you still feel protective and worry about them all the time.

It all changes the minute your children turn into teenagers. This is when in my opinion they start to find themselves having strong valid views and they are simply trying to stamp their mark on the world.

One of the things that I hear often and I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, is that my teenage child tells me everything and always comes to me with their problems. I believe yes, they may well come to you with their problems, although quite often it has been going on for quite a while and ok you can help, but it would have been a lot easier had they come to you earlier. Of course they don’t do that because when your children become teenagers they learn the most infuriating ability of keeping secrets! The more you ask the less likely you are going to be told what the problem is.

Let’s be honest is it any different from what we did with our parents? Although I think it was of a lesser impact when I was teenager.

Technology, social media and everything else is great. It’s the teenagers world. It’s the world they have grown up in and like me, I couldn’t do without my home phone when I was child, so if you took mobile phones off our teenage children all hell would break loose! The danger of course is quite simple. It’s a perfect place to keep their secrets. We would not know or be able to find out what is going on in their lives.

Over the last few years there have been more times than I care to mention where I have to piece together their lives from the little snippets of information they give you. The difficult thing is that sometimes you can so be wrong. Treading carefully is always the order of the day.

Teenage years are a minefield as much for the child as it is for the parent. Teenagers secrets, especially girls, were more often than not written in a personal diary and I’m sure many parents couldn’t resist looking. The danger is of course is that you might read something that will shock you about your teenage child. Today of course they can keep their inner secrets online with a passcode. It is at times like observing their life via Instagram.

I believe the next time you think you are totally in tune and secret free of your teenage children think again. You will only know what they want you to know. It will be heavily censored by them as they grow and mature into adults. Teenagers today live their lives in 140 characters or on snapchat which is sometimes how my conversations with my teenage children goes and then I try to piece it together and maybe have an inkling of what’s happening in their lives. Usually failing miserably.

I was no different. I know there are plenty of things that I got up to in my teenage years that my mother still doesn’t know about to this day.

What is your relationship with your teenage children like? Is it open and they tell you everything? Or do you feel they hold many things back? I would love to know.

Oh you make me nervous… My kids are only 7 & 4 and I find it challenging now. I was a handful as a teenager and my mum always said “You wait to you have kids, Kama is a bitch” I am sure I will be in a world of pain in a few years 😬 #thatfridaylinky

I don’t have any teenagers so I can’t really give any useful help. #ThatFridayLinky

Cheers for this insight into life with teenagers Nige! I have no doubt that the time will come with my little girl too. I actually think it’s a good thing. They are independent people and willing to take on the world on their terms. I have no doubt you’ve equipped all of your kids well to deal with that time, and really that’s all we can ask for. #ThatFridayLinky

I’m not looking forward to my kids becoming teenagers, although they act like them now and they’re only 5 and 1! #ThatFridayLinky

Teenage years can be tough but a lot of fun at the same time. It is indeed a very different world these days with snapchat, IG and pass codes. Love the photo to this post #ThatFridayLinky

Hopefully it’s quite a while before I face this tricky time. I guess all I can do is build the best relationship possible and ensure they trust me. Hopefully that way they’ll tell me as much as possible. #thatfridaylinky

This is an interesting read for me since I’m closer to being a teenager than having one myself! I can clearly remember the way that I treated my parents. We were close, but they were still my parents and I related to them in that way and not the same way that I would relate to my friends.
Then, once you become an adult, things just shift again…and then again when you become a parent yourself.
It’s an interesting thing to see from a parents point of view now.
    Thank you for sharing.

I remember being a teenager and whilst I didn’t really keep secrets I was definitely trying to stamp my mark and the more I was disciplined the more I tried. At times I was awful, not doing anything illegal but just vile in what I would say. I apologised when I was 18! I hope my two are not as sassy as I was! #ThatFridayLinky

I don’t have teenagers but I am dreading it! I remember doing things behind my Dad’s back and he still doesn’t know some things to do this day! They’re not bad and would probably laugh now but I would have probbaly had a huge row at the time ha ha!

I think about all the time what I was doing when I was that age when I think about how I’m going to have to parent when my son gets older. I feel like our job when they’re young enough is to try and equip them with the ability to make good decisions once they reach the point that they’re wanting to do and think things through on their own. #thatfridaylinky

She’s just turned 1 so we’ll see what advancements in technology have done to complicate things then. #ThatFridayLinky

Even though I started late, mine are still only almost 7, and 9. I dread the teenage years! Although, I guess we all survived… I have a dear friend going through quite a rough patch with her teenager and it is mind boggling. Thanks! #ThatFridayLinky I’m going to enjoy every day, even the tough ones.

I’m with you, we don’t know 100% what is going on with our kids, especially teens. I know my mum will tell me things my son has said/done which I frequently didn’t know about, so if that’s just the stuff he’ll tell his gran I know there are definitely things he wont tell any of us! I don’t always think it’s a bad thing though – I didn’t tell my parents a lot of things, and I’m glad I didn’t because they didn’t effect me in the long run but if my parents knew about them it would be…awkward!

I was one of those that thought that I knew pretty much everything that was going on in our teenagers life and that the relationship was good. As you know, I got punched in the face with the real truth and am still trying to rebuild that relationship #thatfridaylinky

My daughter is a long way off this at just 11months old but I know that even now my parents still worry – they’re currently on holiday in France and my 29 year old sister just split from her long term boyfriend, I think my mum was ready to come home on the next ferry just to make sure she was ok!

My children are 1, 4 and 7 so not an issue yet! However, getting information about their day at school or preschool is like pulling teeth. It seems strange that there are 7 hours a day that I know nothing about! Must only get worse! #thatfridaylinky

Argghh I’m scared!! I only have little guys for now. Although my teenage relationship with my own parents was pretty rough so I am determined to have a better relationship with my own children As long as they know they can always come to me that’s all that matters to me x x #ThatLinkyFriday

This is obviously not a problem I’ll encounter for a long time as Autumn is only 10 months old. However, I’m worried about what things will be like when she is a teenager! When I was 13, the first camera phones were coming out and things were less risky than they are now to some extent, although there were still online chat rooms and things that posed hazards. Fast forward 12 years and we have all these things you mention, like smartphones and snapchat. I think I’m glad that I’m not a teenager now. #ThatFridayLinky
