Stress-Busting Tips for a Fun Family Christmas
Christmas is magical. It’s a great time to catch up with friends and family, to overindulge, and enjoy yourself. It’s time to take a break and to spend some quality time with the people that you love the most. This magic is only increased if you’ve got young children at home, counting down the days.
Unfortunately, another thing that’s often increased if you’ve got kids at Christmas is the stress. You might be determined to give your family the perfect Christmas, even if you are dealing with your own issues or working with family lawyers. It’s hard work. You might have a to-do list as long as your arm. There might be money worries, work deadlines, and a million other things to consider. All of this stress can ruin the fun of a family Christmas, so here are some of the things that you can do to beat it.

Start Saying No
You don’t have to do everything, see everyone and go everywhere. In the next few weeks, you might have events stacked up, your days filled with plans. You might be worried about how you are going to fit it all in around work, your normal family life, and any shopping that you might have to do. Stop trying to do it all. Do the things that matter, but don’t be scared to say no. If you don’t have time to meet up with some friends, leave it until January.
Another area most parents should say no more is perhaps their children’s gifts. Have you ever finished your Christmas shopping, only for your kids to sudden ask Santa for something that you haven’t got? What would you do? Rush out and get it, or know that they’ve got enough and that they won’t miss it on the day?
Ask for Help
Most of us, as parents, as guilty of thinking that we have to do everything ourselves. Ask for help. If you are still working when the kid’s breakup, ask other family members to take them for a day, or to do some school runs to help you. Get help where you can.
Indulge in Christmas Movie Days
If you are feeling stressed out and as though you’ve had enough of it all already, stop. Spend an afternoon (or full-day if you can) in your comfy clothes on the sofa watching Christmas movies with your family. When stress hits, hibernate at home.
Cheat Where You Can
If you are cooking dinner this year, cheat. Buy frozen veg and roast potatoes. Buy ready-made stuffing and stick to gravy granules. You might want to have a go at making some things for yourself, but if it’s going to add stress to your day, and take away from your lego building time, is it worth it?
You can also cheat by ticking that “Gift wrapped?” Button when you shop online, and even hiring a cleaner to help at home. Cheat where you can afford to.
Stick to Your Budget
Talking of what you can afford, a common cause of festive stress is financial worry. Make a budget and stick to it. Remember, Christmas isn’t all about gifts and expense. It’s about time with people that we love and sprouts.
