Summer Is Coming! Time To Prepare Your Garden with LOVEThESIGN

I have always thought that one of the most miserable months of the year is January. It has short days, and it seems forever overcast, with the sun no where in sight.

However, even though it’s a cold, dark miserable month, that doesn’t mean you have to be miserable as well. With summer on the way back, you can start preparing your garden for those lovely months of warmer temperatures, long days and the sun shining all day.

As I just mentioned even though it’s still winter, you can now start preparing your garden for those warm summer days and nights. Here are a few jobs I intend doing during the winter months that will give me a perfect garden for summer that all the family can enjoy.

1. Borders

During the winter months, the borders in your garden start to become untidy and many of leaves that have fallen from the overhanging trees during the autumn have turned to mulch, so while the ground is soft and easy to dig, this is a good time to turn the soil over and allow it to breathe and watch your spring blooms come to life.

2. Greenhouse

During the summer one of the most used areas in our garden is the greenhouse. My five year old twins love to garden with mum and dad. The green house is a great place to start planting seeds that can be moved to the garden during the spring, which in turn will give your garden lots of colour in the summer.

3. Patio & Patio Furniture

Another of the most used areas in our garden during the summer is definitely the patio. It’s the centre of our life while enjoying the summer months.

First up is to pressure wash the patio to remove all the grime of the winter months. Next you need to decide if you need some new patio furniture which this year we definitely do. During the winter months we had some very big storms with very high winds, and our patio table, which had a glass top unfortunately was blown over and the glass was shattered. As such we are in the market for a new patio table and chairs with accompanying furniture. Nowadays there’s plenty of choice online. 4. Fencing

If your garden is fenced all around, this is the perfect time to protect it with a wood preservative. This will prevent it from rotting and falling apart before your plants and shrubs start growing and covering the fence. It’s a perfect time to easily get to every part of the fence. Of course it also looks so much better, and why not add a bit of colour? There is a huge choice nowadays and it can add a lot of character to your garden.

5. Lighting

There is one thing I love to add to my garden and that is lights. As dusk falls in the summer, watching lights come on in certain areas of your garden to show off all your plants is wonderful to watch.

I always go around to check all the lights, which are normally solar powered. I also check the bulbs are working in the mains electric operated lights, and replace as necessary.

So there are a few jobs I will be doing over the next month or so in the garden to make it ready for when we spend most of our lives in the summer.
