The post-Christmas clean: 5 places we always forget to clean!
With the gifts and wrapping paper all done, the food eaten, and the spare room finally vacated, it’s time to think about the mammoth task of dealing with the post-Christmas mess.
On top of all the sorting, organising and tidying we have to do, ensuring that our homes are spotlessly clean (or clean enough for family, at least) is another arduous task to add to the never-ending list. A quick vacuum here, a quick polish there, is it enough?
Read on for 5 places we always forget to clean!
Skirting boards
Skirting board, kick board, mop board or even base moulding whatever you call the wooden boards that run along the edges of your rooms, believe it or not, they get incredibly tired and dirty – if you’re looking for brand new skirting boards click the link. Skirting boards help protect the walls from scuffs, scrapes and bumps and also cover the joint between the wall and the floor. It’s because of this that they act like miniature shelves and collect plenty of dust and bacteria if left unattended. Giving them a quick wipe down with a duster will usually do the trick, or if they’re particularly grimy, warm water and a soft cloth will help.
Your house plants
House plants are a stunning addition to any home, they add a splash of colour, help to purify the air and look great! However, they tend to lose their effectiveness if they’re covered in dust and grime! So, it’s important to wipe down your houseplants regularly to ensure that they’re fresh and look good! Whether you have fake or real plants, try freshening them up with a quick spritz in the shower.
Under the bed
We all love getting into bed after a long day, especially into fresh sheets! However, when was the last time you cleaned under your bed? Whether you keep the area tidy or you like to store all your bits and bobs under there, it’s important to keep the area under your bed clean. The amount of dust and dead skin cells that gather under beds is staggering! Keeping the area dust free will reduce the possibility of dust mites, respiratory problems and harmful pathogens.
Your light switches, door handles and light pulls
We all know how quickly germs and illness can spread during the winter months. Which is why it’s important to keep regularly touched surfaces clean and bacteria free. Light switches, door handles and light pulls are usually breeding grounds for bacteria so make sure you give them a quick wipe down with some disinfectant every couple of days to keep those nasty germs at bay.
The shower curtain
There’s nothing more uncomfortable than a freezing cold shower curtain clinging to you whilst you’re showering. But when that shower curtain is dirty? It’s the worst! From mildew to mould, the build up of products and water marks, a dirty shower curtain smells horrendous and looks even worse! Either replace it or wash it on a high temperature to kill all those germs.
