Turning Your House Into Your Dream Home

November 19, 2019

Do you spend hours flicking through interior design magazines? Do you find yourself scrolling through images of impeccably presented homes on Instagram wishing you lived there? The bottom line is there is nothing to stop you creating your perception of perfection. With some TLC and cleverly considered design, your house can become your dream home.

The first thing to consider before giving your house an overhaul is how you use the space. Make a list of all the rooms in your home that you would like to change. Over a short period, keep notes on how you use the space, who uses it and its main function. This will allow you to best consider what upgrades and changes may need to be made. Here are some ideas of things to consider when creating your dream home.

The heart of the home

Whether you like to cook, have friends over or just chill, some say the kitchen is the heart of the home. There are various things you can do to makeover your kitchen. If your units and worktops are a bit dated or a bit dull you can easily give them a cheap and quick makeover. Units can be painted using cupboard primer and paint. A different colour and some new handles can result in a huge transformation.  Worktops can be revamped using the likes of DC fix or Fablon. These come in a range of different colours and textures from wood to marble effect. You can always get a new worktop and leave your units as they are. If your budget allows, you may instead want to give your kitchen a complete makeover by having a new one fitted. There are hundreds of beautiful kitchen units available these days. Whether it be gloss, handle-less, soft close or pink, you should be able to find something to suit your taste.

Time to relax

Most people like to spend their evenings in their lounge or TV room. Wherever you prefer, you will want the décor to be relaxing, welcoming and homely. Looking at interior design magazines and social media outlets will give you some great ideas for colour schemes and decor. Many articles and images will also state where accessories etc can be purchased. This can make it easier for you to replicate the look you love. If you don’t intend doing the work yourself, it’s a good idea to get quotes from local painter and decorators. This will give you an idea of cost as well as timescales. New wallpaper and a lick of paint can transform your room. Buying different accessories like throws, mirrors, and cushions can pull a look together.

Can you create more space?

We sometimes fall into the trap of thinking our dream home is unattainable because our house is too small. If you are struggling for space, why not consider extending? Some people are restricted due to lack of outside space however there are other alternatives. If you can’t extend outwards you may be able to extend upwards! Speaking to a roofing contractor in the first instance is a good idea. Habitable spaces usually need to have windows installed to conform to regulations. Whether it be Velux or dormer windows, a roofing specialist can advise you what options are available based on the structure of your roof and building.

The great outdoors

For many, their dream home includes beautiful outdoor space too. Consider how you want your garden to be used. Do you want to grow vegetables? Maybe you want to have lots of colourful pots and plants. Perhaps you just want an easily maintainable area for the kids to play. With so many options available from decking to built-in trampolines, you can easily create your dream garden too! When creating your dream garden there will be a need for waste clearance so it’s important to get it this organised so you can carry on with your hard work.

Time for bed

There is nothing nicer than a relaxing, luxurious looking bedroom. As well as changing your décor, you can also buy some gorgeous bedding. From sumptuous duvets to beautiful duvet covers and throws, there are some stunning options available. Coastal-inspired bedding can make your bedroom environment more comfortable. The soothing fabrics and calming colors are great for relaxation and inducing sleep. Meanwhile, the coastal vibe makes you feel like you took the beach or countryside to your bedroom, creating your personal haven where you can rest and rejuvenate without troubles. The way your room is lit can also make a huge difference. Some bedside lamps come with dimmable bulbs allowing you to read when you want but also dim to create a more relaxing atmosphere. Window dressings are also something to consider changing. Purchasing some blackout lined curtains will ensure that you aren’t woken up when the sun comes out. You can also dress them up with swags and tiebacks, creating a luxurious feel. Whatever you decide to choose, you should be in for a good night’s sleep.
