What makes a marriage/relationship work

April 26, 2016

What makes a marriage?

I’ve been married twice and divorced once. oes it make me an expert? Of course it does! No, I’m only kidding!
Although I do think that there are ingredients a marriage/relationship requires to make it successful and happy. Anyway, here’s my take on marriage and maybe what makes it work.

1. Trust

Trust is such an important part of marriage. In fact without it, I believe nothing works. I would definitly trust my wife 100% about anything and I would like to think she trust me 100%. Once trust is even slightly eroded or something happens that reduces trust even by 1% it’s a rocky road to eventual disaster. It’s almost impossible to re-build trust because of the way we are as people. It just eats away at you, until you cannot see what truth is anymore.
2. Laughter

It’s so important to laugh and have a joke with each other. It helps if you find the same things funny, which in truth you should, after all you got together all those years ago and you must have laughed at the same things in the honeymoon period that every relationship has. In our marriage we do laugh a lot together and enjoy taking the mickey out of each other and that is definitly part of the secret.

3. Sex
In the bedroom whoever said if it doesn’t happen that often it’s not the end of the world, total rubbish! Of course it matters! Making love is vitally important to a couple surviving. Compatialibilty in the bedroom is a major part of any relationship working otherwise you just become friends and that’s not the ethos of marriage.

4. Compromise/change

Compromise is so important. We can’t always be right and let’s be honest when you are not right the right thing to do is back down and of course when one of you wants to do something different to the other, that’s another time to find the middle ground of course, otherwise everything becomes a battle and that really is not healthy for a relationship.
When you met your other half you fell in love with the person that they are so why is it people become determined to change them? It never works and eventually people split for that reason. We are what we are and there is no reason to change for anyone.

5. Love

That magic word love is strange. I can say I love my mum, my children etc, but the difference is I’m in love with my wife and that is a total different level of love and one that all marriages and relationships need.
I’m sure there are many other ingredients that make a marriage happy and complete and this is just my take on what I think makes marriage work. I would love to know what you think.
