What Makes Your Child Feel Secure
I am a father of five children. I know! doesn’t he ever learn?! However, all five of my children had some form of feeling secure.
My oldest child, J, had to have a blanket and a dummy. The blanket was a pink fleecy one with a silk edge. She would not go anywhere without it! In fact I had two blankets because one of them was always being misplaced and she would never go out or to sleep without holding the silk edge of her blanket and she had to have a dummy in her mouth too.
She was fast approaching starting nursery and the blanket and dummy were still very much the most important things in her life! Eventually at about five years of age I had the dummy surgically removed and cut up! As for the blanket she may still have it!
My second daughter, E, had what I would call a very interesting form of feeling secure. I think it was just me. I didn’t need to look for my own shadow because she was mine 24/7!
Wherever I went she was right beside me! If I sat down she was right next to me! If we were walking anywhere holding my hand tight was E! In fact fast approaching her teens and we could be walking though town and she had to be right next to me almost stepping on my toes, but it was all ok because it made her feel happy and secure and I kind of of loved that!
My son A had a very interesting way of going to sleep he would lie in my arms and would play with my hair. Twirling it around and around until I thought he was going to pull it out by the roots! Actually there were times it actually hurt, but it worked and he always went to sleep that way!
The twins amazingly – I bet you’re surprised! – have also got comforters.
R, well she went though a selection of cuddly dogs and finally settled on a brown dog, which goes absolutely everywhere with her> She also has a pink and red blanket which my wife ‘borrowed’ from the SCBU unit when they were babies. Three years on and we still it and of course she also has a dummy too.

M was a little bit different while we were on holiday in Menorca two years ago I had a pair of brand new £50 Holister shorts. M used to play with the cords on the shorts as she was drifting off to sleep. It made her feel secure.
Over the next six months I slowly began to lose ownership of my shorts as M eventually went out with her mum and sister and refused to leave the house without the shorts! So for me it was bye-bye shorts!
Over the next month or so she became attached to her SCBU blanket, a baby doll, the shorts in particular and also a dummy!

It’s funny because both of the girls have to be convinced to have them washed. This at times can take days until eventually they put them in the washing machine themselves and then immediately on a radiator to dry because they simply can’t live without them!
As for the dummy’s, much like their older sisters I’m sure these will have to be surgically removed too!

What I find fascinating that all five of my children have had some sort of comforters, but there is by no means any set formula! If it works use it!

Wow you certainly have the experience! Whatever works for your child as long as they are secure. I have worried about the dummy but it's only for a short while isn't it? I can see already how fast children grow up!

My daughter has two comforters. She has a day one & a night one. One is a jellycat lamb that goes everywhere with her during the day. The other is a plain bedtime bear that always goes to bed with her. If we wash them, she doesn't touch them for days. She just sniffs them & chucks them away & gets really upset. We avoid washing them when she's poorly or teething because she really needs them during these times. If she's upset, if she's tired, she picks up one or the other & cuddles. I love that she has comforters that she can independently pick up. Although I love that she comes to us when she wants comfort as well, it reassures me when I drop her to nursery that she has her lamb if she gets upset.

Such a lovely post. My daughter also chooses the interesting form – me! A lot of people have made remarks about it but quite honestly…I am very happy for it as I know it won't last forever. Interesting that all children have very different ways of making themselves feel secure. #bestandworst

Like they say, if it's not broke, don't fix it. Made me think of all things my kids cling to. #wineandboobs

I totally agree with you, why shouldn't our children feel secure and if that means a dummy or a blanket then what's the problem. My son who is now 3 have his bedtime bear that he loves and a dummy still at night and at the moment if that's what comforts him why should I deprive him of that? Thanks again for linking up to the #bestandworst and hope to see you again next week!

I had a teddy which I took everywhere, I still have it to this day 26 years on and its on my bedside table, looking very worse for wear!! M doesn't really have anything, she never took to a dummy. She has a cuddly sheep that she loves, but she doesn't need to take it everywhere. Its so funny how some children have and some don't. I love that your M took your shorts, very unique and cute! 🙂 #binkylinky

Aw, I love how you've shared all your children's security stories here. My daughter is a thumb sucker, and I would love for her to take to a toy more to discourage her. Perhaps when she's a little older #binkylinky

My youngest has the same blanket that she had as a baby as a comforter. We had to buy several of them so we could rotate them for washing. #PoCoLo

It's lovely when they have something that makes them feel my secure. My eldest is 4 next week and to go to sleep, whether for his daytime nap (yes, he still naps most days!!!) or at night he has to have a 'tag' (a label on clothes) – doesn't matter what it's on, as long as he has one and it is the right material. He still as a beaker of milk for his nap and sleep. My middle one (2) has a teddy bear to go to sleep. My youngest, who is 6 months, has a little blanket and a dummy. #binkylinky

Cute post! It's one thing having a comfort blanket, but I bet a little part of you was gutted when it was a pair of £50 shorts 🙂 Thanks for hosting the #binkylinky

The Tubblet has Paw, a cuddly dog, that goes everywhere with her. But stays in the car as we're terrified she'll lose it and the world will end. Like your children, she loves the "special smell". I Fabreeze him every so often for his own good! Lovely post! #binkylinky

I really wish we could have got T to take any form of comforter as the only one he has is me! Great post! Thanks for hosting #binkylinky

It's odd, my eldest had a teddy when he was little (I actually think it was a Hoob if you remember them), we lost it and I had to contact the makers to get a new one! My youngest son had a blanket for a while but soon grew out of it, but I don't think my daughter had anything like that, strange really.
