My daughter is home for summer from university
Last Friday I drove down to Southampton university to pick up my 19 year old daughter for the summer holidays.
My 21 year old daughter and 17 year old son came with me to surprise their sister and to have a nosey at her new accommodation now that she has moved out of the university halls.
She has completed her first year studying for a nursing degree. Nursing is a very different degree course to most university courses. For starters it’s longer and they only get one month off in the summer.
My daughter has settled well into university life and is doing very well on her course. I’m sure there is room for improvement, but then there always is. I believe it was quite a shock, the jump it was from year 13 school to university and how much you have to do on your own and take responsibility for assignments, money, feeding yourself and generally looking after yourself, but she has taken to it very well. Showing some signs of great maturity and independence.
I have lost count how many times I have been up and down in the 12 months, but I will add she has taken the train quite a few times.
We had a pleasant journey down and for me it’s a great time to catch up with my older children and what’s happening in their lives because they are trapped in the car! Ha ha!
She was really surprised to see them when we arrived and it’s lovely to see them together as it doesn’t happen very often. Her new accommodation is a typical student house, but actually I thought was very nice, clean and tidy.
It was a quick turnaround and within 20 minutes we were on our way back home.
One of the biggest loves of my life has always been music, although I’m not one to live in the music of yesterday I have always loved current music of the day.
Growing up my three oldest children were subjected to me brainwashing them with the music I loved at the time! Thankfully I didn’t completly destroy their love of music, actually quite the opposite.
My three older children love music and are constantly listening to it. My 17 year old son all of sudden said put this playlist of songs on that I made. Well! I couldn’t believe it nor could my daughters he had remembered so many songs from when he was growing up, the time flew by as we all started singing to Gun’n’Roses, James Blunt, Green Day, The Streets,and Jack Johnson to name a few! It was a brilliant hour of wonderful memories and I was genuinely shocked at how many songs he remembered.
My love of music has passed down to my children and even my four year old twins love listening to the latest songs. Strangely my older children now play me the latest songs which is funny how it has reversed itself around. Thankfully they all have great taste, undoubtedly inherited from their old dad! Ha ha!
So I’m looking forward to spending some time with my daughter while she is home for the month. It’s her birthday tomorrow and we will be going out for lunch and this will be a rare moment that all five of my children will be together at the same time.
