When you are five years old it never ceases to amaze me how quickly children change and develop, and my five year old twins are no different to other children.

In school they have recently been moved up a level in their reading books which was very pleasing to see. Both the girls recognition of words is frightening. They are at the tender age of five, but they’re becoming quite accomplished readers and making only the occasional mistake. It’s really amazing how they develop the ability to read.
I have noticed other changes in the girls which I also find fascinating.
My twins have always been asleep by 7pm every night which is fantastic as it allows mummy and daddy to have some down time and relaxation during the evening. Of course the downside of them going early to bed is they wake early in the morning. In our case my twin girls are awake and raring to go at 6am This is where I have seen another change in the girls.

My twin girls have always found their way into our bed at sometime during the night. Occasionally I will feel them getting into bed, other times I wake up to see them cuddled up to either mummy or daddy. If I’m honest I’m not really bothered as long as we all get a full nights sleep, and we do have a super king size bed so actually there is plenty of room. I know some don’t agree with co-sleeping and I totally respect that, for me though it has never been a problem, I’m sure they will grow out of it soon enough. I wrote a post some time ago called How many of us co-sleep with our children.
I noticed over the last week or so that the girls are waking up in the morning and sitting in the middle of us chatting away. Of course they think I am asleep, well I am kind of, but curiosity gets the better of me and I end up listening with my eyes closed. I actually have no idea what they are talking about in fact it makes no sense whatsoever to me. They change their names, they are no longer R or M and quite often name themselves from their friends in school. Their conversation is usually along the lines of putting the world to rights, that is according to a five year old haha! It takes all my willpower not to burst out laughing at some of things they say!
On Sunday this took a step further than it had before, normally the girls don’t leave the bedroom until one of us has woken up, which I might add is usually me because all I can hear from the other side of the bed is yes you guessed it, my wife snoring her head off, in fact I’m convinced if North Korea dropped a nuclear warhead in our drive she would sleep through it. Haha!
So on Sunday my five year old twins actually got up and disappeared out of the bedroom leaving us asleep. It’s ok though the house is locked up with no keys around and we live in a bungalow so no stairs to negotiate. We always turn the TV to CBeebies the night before and they know how to turn the telly on so they are happy.
When I eventually got out of bed at 7am, yes you guess it my wife is still snoring! When I walked into the lounge to my amazement my five year old twin girls were dressed and playing with toys together making up games only a five year old could while watching TV now and again. I’m pretty sure they didn’t even see me. Haha!
The most interesting and fascinating thing for me is time flies at such a speed, because it really doesn’t seem like yesterday that they were little babies and totally reliant on mum and dad for everything. Of course they are still very reliant on us for lots of things, but they are starting to show huge independence in sorting things out for themselves. Which of course is all a part of growing up.
If I could, I think it would be wonderful to get inside the mind of a five year or in my case five year old twins to find out what is going on. The innocence of children is truly awesome.
Would love to know your thoughts. Do you ever marvel at your little ones behaviour.

This takes me back to a time when my boys would climb into our bed in the mornings for a cuddle it seems so long ago

Ahhh sounds like a fab stage – my little one is nearly 19 months and has just started to play imaginative games, feeding her teddies and playing with figures, it’s amazing how much she’s picked up! #TriumphantTales

That sounds like sweet moments, that they are getting on so well and chatting it up while in the comfort of mum and dad’s bed. It will make some lovely memories 🙂 #TriumphantTales

Really enjoying reading about your twins as mine are at the same stage. In the mornings they occasional get up and play with their Sylvanian families for ages, which lets us have a bit of a lie in. I love listening in on their games (when they let me) the little games they make up are so cute! #triumphanttales

this really is such a great age. Independence, but still in need of daddy for most things! #triumphanttales

My daughter is 11 and still comes in and gets into my side of the bed on weekend mornings lol. It is amazing how quickly they start changing and growing up.

Like, yeah, that’s exactly the kind of thing that coule happen in this house. In fact a few times the kids have got themselves up early and got washed and dressed before breakfast time. It’s fine for Helen, she just puts school uniform on. Izzy, however, can dress up in the craziest combinations if she doesn’t have assistance! But yes, they get independent very quickly. I noticed with Helen a huge leap in her abilities and independence when she started school. I suspect Izzy will go through something similar in September. Can’t believe we’ve reached that stage already with Izzy!

Five is a brilliant age. Five was when I started sitting outside their room at night listening to their conversations before they fell asleep. Five was the last time I had any hope of understanding what they were talking about.
Now it’s all about games I don’t play in a language I don’t understand?! I miss five.

Little Man isn’t far behind your twins in age and he’s started to get up and just play in the mornings. Sometimes I’m absolutely fine with this – the extra lie in and the bundle free morning, is sometimes a treat, but other mornings, I do miss his snuggles! Hopefully, he won’t stop it completely for a while yet. They seem to grow up so fast. Thanks for linking to #TriumphantTales, we’d love to see you back next week 🙂

Oh how adorable are they? I love it when kids get a self of independance and want to do their own things. the other day Ben had his first tantrum as he wanted to walk unaided but cant quite yet!
Thank you for sharing this with us at #TriumphantTales. I hope to see you back next week
