Where have the last six weeks gone? The summer holidays are over and it’s back to the packed lunches and the mayhem of the school run.
Get dressed for school!
Where are your school shoes?
We are going to be late! Hurry up turn and the tv off!
Do you need need the toilet?
It’s raining, you need a coat!
Let’s go! No, wait! Where are your school bags?
Have I got to do everything kids….?
Come on this is crazy! Every morning it’s a mad rush to just get out of the house, let alone arrive at the school on time, which staggers me that we usually manage to do this as often as we do considering we only live a 10 minute walk from the school or a three minute drive.
What is it with kids and the school run? If we were going swimming or the beach they would be in the car in a split second. Screaming mum, dad where are you? We are ready! Then they will constantly be asking are we there yet?
What is it about school that puts our kids in slow motion? Sometimes it’s like watching snails move across the grass with a dog chasing them, me being the dog, multi tasking like there is no tomorrow, my brain working in overdrive and trying to second guess your child’s next move, but like a snail they just never speed up. Haha! Kids eh!
What is the secret to a successful, peaceful and no hitches school run?
My wife and I have actually tried everything and we are still rushing with minutes to go before the school bell rings and this just highlights the late parents. You know the ones walking at speed with a child being dragged behind them still in slow motion.
What we have found is routine and being organised is key to a successful morning before, haha! Who am I kidding? Even with the best will and organisation in the world there is always a hitch or 100 hitches!
We are now back to being robots, getting ready for school, all the packed lunches made and ready the night before, uniforms laid out on beds ready, shoes clean, and what could possibly stop us being on time? Oh Yeh! Kids.
So this year I’m going to make a huge effort to not get stressed between the hours of 8 and 8.30am. Why? Because I will be organised and my kids will do exactly as I tell them. Not! But you have to believe and have faith! Kids can sometimes surprise you.
My plan for the new school year is to go to bed until next July and wake up in time for the next summer holidays! Haha! If, only!
What’s your school run like? How do you cope with that half an hour before you have to leave for school? I would love to hear your thoughts.
