Ways to save money on your utility bills

Utility bills can make a huge dent in our pockets. When winter approaches, bills increase. There are, however, things that you can do to ensure that your bills are kept to a minimum. Here are some ways to save money on your utility bills.

Lighting

How many times have you gone upstairs to find there are lots of lights on but no-one is even there? Turning your lights off when a room isn’t in use reduces consumption. 

Sockets

Many of use leave the television on stand by when not in use. The kettle, toaster and other appliances are also left switched on. Whilst minimal, these still use energy. When something is not in use, turn the switch off. 

Mobile phones and tablets

Most households now have many mobile phones and tablets charging regularly. Once charged switch them off. Many people just remove the cable and leave the charging cable plugged in and switched on. Not only is this a fire hazard, it also uses electricity. 

Roof inspections

Heat rises upwards and can escape through your roof if there are any missing or slipped tiles or slates. The slightest hole in your roof can not only cause damage to your property but you may lose heat. Having your roof checked regularly can save you money in the long run.

Replacement windows

Whether your windows are single glazed or just old, having replacement windows installed can create a huge difference to your heating bills. Whilst there is an initial outlay, you can save thousands in the long run.  

Heating

Whilst having the heating on in winter is usually necessary, try and keep it at a reasonable temperature. When it’s cold it’s tempting to turn it up to its maximum setting, but it isn’t necessary. If it’s not particularly cold, turn your heating off when you are out. In colder months you want to ensure your pipes don’t freeze. When it’s warmer there is no need to have your heating on if you aren’t in.

Comparison Sites

Comparison sites are a great way to save money on utility bills. Sometimes switching suppliers can save you hundreds over a year. Check cashback sites too. Sometimes you can get cash just for switching!

Curtains

Having curtains can make a huge difference to the temperature of your room. Thermal lined curtains, in particular, keep the cold out.

Track your consumption

Smart meters are becoming more and more popular. They allow you to see where you are using the most electricity. Track your usage and reduce where most effective. Some like to turn it into a game with the kids and see if they can beat their previous days’ consumption. It’s a way to get the kids involved and save money at the same time.

Old fashioned methods

There is nothing wrong with using some of the more old-fashioned methods to save money on your utility bills. Wearing an extra layer or two, buying some cosy socks and filling hot water bills can be just as effective.
