As a parent, it’s likely that your home is overrun by children’s toys, socks, shoes, sweetie wrappers, and generally anything else that you can find in your home when you’ve got children. There’s nothing better than a well lived in home, so you wouldn’t want it any different. However, there should always be a space for the adults to kick back and relax without the children’s belongings over running the space that you’re in. This room is usually your bedroom, and if yours is in dire need of an update, take a look at these tips and ideas on how to create the perfect adult bedroom.

Storage

It’s almost impossible to properly relax when there’s a mountain of clutter around the place, or clothing draped across the bedroom. Why not get clever and build your own storage in your bedroom? While the easy option is to go out and buy a new set for your bedroom, you can run into issues like it not coming pre-built and even struggling to find a set that fits your bedroom perfectly.

Building your own wardrobes and shelf spaces means that you can fill every awkward space, every nook and cranny and put it to good use. It’s really inexpensive to do and you don’t have to be a master with power tools to accomplish a sturdy and stylish storage solution. If you’re really clever, you could leave a space to integrate your television or alarm clock within the structure. Choose panelling that will match the colour scheme of your bedroom to tie the look together.

Privacy

One thing that every bedroom needs is privacy. Take a look at these ideas to add some privacy to your bedroom:

If you’ve got a four poster bed, consider adding some net curtains around your bed for a super romantic, super cosy, and super private bed.

Add blinds to your room. You can buy roman blinds that still let in light, yet will block out the chance of any wandering eyes. Have you ever wondered how much do roman blinds cost? These days, you don’t have to spend the earth on privacy, so take a look at some roman blinds for your bedroom!

Put a lock on the door. While your children are likely to wander in and out of your room during the night, you both deserve some time with no interruptions.

It’s not just people peering into your bedroom that you might want to keep private either. Putting locks on your drawers where personal and sentimental items are kept means that you know your things are always safely locked away.

Colours

The colour scheme in your bedroom actually makes a massive difference to how easily you can relax. Bright and bold colours will stimulate your mind and prevent you from switching off from the day as easily. Stick to cosier colours like deep red which is not only a soothing colour, but it’s an extremely romantic colour too. If you’ve got a small bedroom, it might be an idea to stick to neutral colours and pop artwork around the place to tie in a colour scheme. Entertainment

While the bedroom is meant for sleeping and well, you know what else, it’s also nice to be able to retreat to the bedroom and relax in bed while catching up on the shows you’ve missed while the kids have been watching peppa pig (again). As mentioned earlier, why not build a space for your television so that you can hide the wires and keep the job looking professional? If the theme in your bedroom is modernised, an addition that’s trending at the moment is a television backlight. This is an LED light that’s installed behind your TV, and can either be one colour or pulse a choice of colours. It adds great ambience to the room and is a perfect addition for any modernised design.

Linen

No bedroom is complete without some new matching sets of linen to go on your bed. Rather than using the cheapy bed sets that you find at your local supermarket, why not go for something that’s going to help you sink down into a restful and natural slumber? Give your skin the comfort it deserves with egyptian cotton bedding. You can get them at a very reasonable price from House of Fraser, and you’re bound to find something that tickles your fancy.

While you’re at it, why not treat the Mrs and buy her some scatter cushions to display on the bed? We all know that they serve no purpose other than for display, but will will finish off the look of your bed nicely.

Often with bed sets, you can pick up matching curtains too. We mentioned blinds earlier, so why not choose some curtains that will compliment your new blinds nicely. Going for blackout curtains would be a wise choice because you’ve got privacy blinds to let light in, and when you need darkness you’ve got your curtains.

Scent

Believe it or not, the smell in your bedroom makes all of the difference to how you feel when you’re relaxing in bed. Take a look at these tips on how to have your bedroom smelling lovely at all times:

Wash your bedding and add fabric conditioner that lets off high amounts of smell. Comfort creations are a great example of such a product.

Create your own reed air freshener with some wick, your favourite smell in the zoflora range, and some water to dilute the smell. DIY diffusers can last up to 3 months, so you won’t have to worry for quite some time! Alternatively, you could pop the zoflora into a spray bottle and dilute it for a super handy air freshener to spritz around every now and then.

Get some pot pourri in a bowl and leave it on your windowsill. Not only will it look lovely, but every time a gust of wind rolls in your bedroom will smell sensational

Lighting

Lighting in any room is important, but when it comes to the bedroom it’s imperative that you get the right lighting so that you’re able to relax properly, or even set the mood. Take a look at these ideas for lighting options in your bedroom:

We touched on LED TV backlights earlier. Some people choose to use that as an option rather than a lamp or their main light.

Dimmer switches are a fab way of being able to use your main light without being blinded by the glare from it. They’re really inexpensive to buy and install.

Floor lamps are a great addition to any modern and sophisticated bedroom, consider adding one each side of your bed for convenience and symmetry.

Consider salt lamps to aid with relaxation and also relief from any stress or anxiety symptoms.

As you can see, the perfect adult bedroom isn’t that far out of reach! Is there anything not on this list that you would add to create the perfect adult bedroom? Let us know below!
